Different interpretations of statistical figures

The choice of statistical chart gives the opportunity to influence how others interpret it. Choosing a bar chart, a line chart or a pie chart may have an influence on what kind of conclusions are drawn. You can inspire different interpretations by, for example, moulding the time scale, using percentages or numbers and varying the starting point of the scale.

When designing a chart you should think carefully about how to present the statistical information as truthfully as possible. This exercise offers examples on how the same chart can be presented with the help of various graphics, and what kinds of news headlines different presentations may produce. There are two different statistical charts based on the same information. The choice of presentation aims to highlight certain issues. Look at the charts and think how someone has intended to manipulate the message. Choose the headline that best portrays the main message in each chart. Drag a headline to the appropriate chart.

There are four exercises in all and they open in a new browser window. Use the arrow keys to move to the next exercise. After completion click Close to exit the window.

How to complete the task: There are two statistical charts and three alternative texts on each exercise page. Drag the appropriate text over each chart. If the text is correct, it will remain on the chart. If you choose the wrong alternative, the text will revert to its original place and the program will prompt you to try again.
