Exercises on statistics

It is said there are lies, damned lies and statistics. OK, thatīs an exaggeration. However, statistical charts can sometimes be complex. It is necessary to understand that the presentation of statistics can be suited to the presenterīs own purposes. When analysing statistical charts you should always use your common sense.

In this section you will learn how to read the messages behind statistical charts, associate the charts with various turning points in economic history, and see how a single statistic can be used to create completely different charts.

When interpreting statistical charts you should first pay attention to the title of the chart. A good title gives accurate information on the chart. Then you should look at the horizontal and vertical lines - what the chart tells you, what units are used to describe things, or whether it points to a particular time period.

Before you do the exercises you can look at the Statistics Finland Web School which presents the basics of how to interpret statistical graphics interpretation.
